Frequently asked questions
What age can learners be assessed?
Latest guidance (SASC, 2025) recommends waiting until at least 8 years of age. This is because young children develop at different rates, and it is important to consider whether their difficulties may simply reflect their current stage of development or other factors, including medical issues, before diagnosing dyslexia.
Can you identify other difficulties?
Specific Learning Difficulties is a general term that may include dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism, speech and/or language difficulties. I am able to identify but not diagnose co-occurring difficulties and can make suggestions for support and write a referral to a relevant specialist, if required.
Does an assessment guarantee a diagnosis?
At times, it may not be possible to provide a clear-cut diagnosis of dyslexia. Regardless of a diagnosis, the comprehensive report will detail areas of strength and difficulty, with specific recommendations to support your child at whatever stage of education they are in. In some cases, another assessment at a later date may be recommended.
How much does the assessment cost?
The total cost of the assessment and report is £560.
A £50 non-refundable deposit is required when booking.
£200 is due 5 days before the assessment, with the remaining £310 payable within 14 days of the assessment.
Please note that I am unable to release the report until full payment has been received. Payment can be made by BACS.
What if I need to reschedule or cancel?
If you are unable to attend the assessment for any reason, please let me know as soon as possible. If a cancellation is made within 4 days of the assessment date, a £100.00 cancellation fee will be charged. I reserve the right to cancel or reschedule assessments, without penalty or liability, for reasons outside my control. Should this situation arise, I will provide as much notice as reasonably possible and offer alternative assessment dates or refund any fees paid for the cancelled assessment.
Where do the assessments take place?
Assessments take place in my home in Yateley, Hampshire, where I aim to create a calm, warm and welcoming environment for every child. I understand that assessments can feel daunting, so being in a comfortable home setting can help children feel more relaxed and at ease. This often allows them to settle in naturally, be themselves and show their true strengths, needs and personality, rather than feeling overwhelmed by an unfamiliar clinical setting.
Can I stay with my child during the assessment?
For safeguarding purposes, I ask that a parent or carer remains in my home for the full duration of the assessment. You will be seated in an adjoining room, with clear visibility of your child at all times, so that you can feel reassured while allowing your child the space to engage with the assessment naturally. I’ll provide refreshments for you to enjoy while you wait, and you are more than welcome to log on to the Wi-Fi.
To help your child remain focused and ensure the assessment environment is as calm and distraction-free as possible, I kindly ask that siblings or other children do not attend the appointment.
